Helping leaders bring cognitive awareness to AI adoption

About Jodi

Jodi Davenport is an MIT-trained cognitive scientist and Vice President of Learning Science and Technology at WestEd, where she leads large-scale initiatives spanning learning science, educational technology, and AI adoption. She works with education systems, state agencies, and leadership teams across the country Most AI guidance focuses on what the technology can do and how to use it. Jodi focuses on what people need to understand about themselves to use AI well. Her concept of critical cognitive awareness helps leaders recognize the assumptions, biases, and reasoning patterns they bring to their interactions with AI. That self-knowledge equips people to question AI outputs, identify where human judgment matters most, and make deliberate choices about when, whether, and how to use AI. She speaks to K–12 and postsecondary leaders, state agency teams, workforce organizations, and international audiences about AI literacy, critical thinking, and responsible adoption. She offers leaders a practical, research-grounded approach to AI that keeps human thinking, judgment, and connection at the center.
